THE senator, representing Delta Central, Pius Ewherido, died on Sunday of complications resulting from a domestic accident.
The former deputy Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly died at the National Hospital, Abuja at the age of 50.
Confirming the death of the senator,
Senate Spokesman, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, said the passing away of
the senator was a shock, but the Senate was awaiting further details of
the death from the deceased’s family.
In a statement on Sunday, Abaribe said,
“Ewherido who represents Delta Central Senatorial District, only took
ill at the weekend and was not able to make it.”
According to him, Ewherido was one of
the most “articulate, erudite, urbane and easy-going” senators who
brought his wealth of experience as a former Speaker of Delta State
House of Assembly to bear on the floor.
President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday said he received with shock and sadness news of the passing away of Senator Ewherido.
According to a statement by the Special
Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati,
Jonathan extended condolence to the deceased senator’s family and the
entire Senate.
The statement said, “The President joins
them, members of the Ewherido family and the government and people of
Delta State in mourning the distinguished legislator, who served
commendably as a member and deputy speaker of the Delta State of
Assembly before his election as the Senator representing the Delta
Central Senatorial District in the 2011 general elections.”
The Delta State Government equally mourned the state ex-deputy speaker.
In a statement by the Secretary to the
State Government, Ovuozourie Macaulay, the state said, “The Government
of Delta State wish to commiserate with and express its deep condolences
to the family at this trying moment. Government advises Deltans,
particularly members of his constituency, to remain calm.”
Meanwhile, President of the Senate,
David Mark, has cut short his participation in the Gold Tournament in
Accra Ghana and returned home on learning of the death of the senator.
A statement on Sunday said Mark wept
over the untimely death of Ewherido whom he described as a forthright
and vibrant parliamentarian.
Mark said, “We have lost a true friend
and colleague. We lost a vibrant and a very articulate senator. We have
lost a patriotic Nigerian who stood to be counted when it mattered.”
