How Eight PDP Members Perish In Auto Crashes

An accident scene

Eight members of Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party died late Tuesday night in a fatal motor accident in Enugu State while returning to Abia.
The incident occurred when a bus conveying 16 members of the Abia PDP was said to have skidded off the road and plunged into a ditch.
While eight of them sustained serious injuries, our correspondent learnt that five of the passengers died on the spot and three others died later.

The victims included aides to the State Chairman of the party, Chief Emma Nwaka, and some members of staff of the party’s secretariat, as well as wards of the party’s chairmen.
Officials at the Abia State PDP secretariat declined the request on them to disclose names of the deceased, as at the time of filing this story.
It was, however, gathered that the party members were returning from Anambra State, through Enugu State to Abia State when the accident occurred.
“They had gone to conduct a ward congress for the party in Anambra State,” said an unidentified member of the Anambra State PDP.
The Publicity Secretary of the party in the state, Mr. Uchechi Ogbuka, confirmed the incident, and described it as “a tragedy.”
He said four of the victims hailed from Isuikwuato Local Government Area of the state, the home council for state party chairman.
Meanwhile, five persons reportedly died in another road accident near Okada village junction, off the Benin-Ore expressway, in Ovia North East Local Government Area, in Edo State.
The car in which the victims were travelling was said to have run into a stationery lorry, resulting in the instant death of four of the occupants, while another died on the way to the hospital. Two others survived with serious injuries.
Eye-witnesses said the driver of the vehicle was a known epileptic patient. The witnesses said the driver had an epileptic seizure, which made him skid off the road and hit the lorry.
Families of the victims, who were seen weeping over the dead bodies, said operators of the motor-park knew the health condition of the driver, but still allowed him to carry passengers.
