Police kills Man In Ibadan Market

Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar

There was confusion at the Oje Market in Ibadan, Oyo State on Sunday when a ‘stray’ bullet allegedly from the police hit a civilian, Ojo Obisesan.
The victim reportedly died on the spot.
The killing, our correspondent gathered, took place when the Divisional Police Officer of Agugu Division, Timothy Adedeji (ASP), led a team of officers to quell a misunderstanding between some commercial transporters and hoodlums.

The hoodlums were reportedly extorting money from motorists in the area.
An eyewitness, who craved anonymity, said, “Adedeji with two other policemen prevailed on the aggrieved parties to stop fighting.
“After quelling the crisis the mob started shouting the praises of the DCO. The man (DCO), being an Ibadan man, tried to disperse the mob through persuasion. But when they attempted to attack him, he fired some shots into the air to scare them.
“As he brought his gun out a shot was fired and the bullet hit a man. The man died. The mob swooped on the policemen. They took the police rifle and bolted away.”
But the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Bisi Ilobanefor, said, “The two policemen were rescued from the mob. The mob later regrouped and went to Agugu Division apparently to attack the station. However, our men were able to control the situation.
“The policemen in an Armoured Personnel Carrier that was positioned some metres away from the station to control the mob attack later saw a police rifle with the mob. The officers pursued the attackers, who reacted by firing shots at the police.
“The stray bullet from the hoodlums that stole the police gun hit a passerby and unfortunately the person died.”
